Gex will need to whack two ice-skating elves, recover the three staffs of Ra, and visit the world's largest mound of poop, among other noble deeds. Each themed world represents a different channel, with players able to switch between Holiday TV, Mystery TV, Tut TV, Western Station, Anime Channel, and the Superhero Show. Like its predecessor, players control the gecko from a side-scrolling perspective in an adventure spanning six worlds, each of which parodies movies and television. The wisecracking gecko first seen on 3DO makes his second appearance on Game Boy Color with Gex 3: Deep Pocket Gecko.
The game ends with Hex and Xtra getting used. Later, when Xtra Gex talks about his time in Media Dimension, Alfred Hex tries to warn of a global emergency but is ignored. Reza will be destroyed once and for all, and Hex will save Xtra. Together they find Rez and challenge him for the last fight. Through his secret hideout, Hex returns to the middle dimensions and bypasses many TV channels with the help of his butler Alfred, and during the trial frees and befriends the prisoners Rez, Rex and Kuz. Xtra manages to contact Gex and informs him that Rez returned and kidnapped her to lure her. While watching TV, Gex discovers that his partner and lover, Agent Xtra, now head of the TV terror protection department, has been reported missing.
The N64 version has a small number of actual FMV sequences with Xtra. The package hunter on the Nintendo 64 or the PlayStation memory card were the only storage options.
